The bird life around Lake Victoria and Mfangano Island is spectacular, and over 350 different birds have been identified around Mfangano Island and Lake Victoria. Guests can join our resident ornithologist on bird watching trips both on foot and by boat around the island. It is possible to see the majestic Fish Eagles nesting in the giant fig trees along the lakeshore, Giant, Pygmy and Malachite King Fishers are common sights along with great flocks of cormorants and Egrets to name but a few.Mfangano is also home to the rare and endangered White Throated Otters which can regularly be seen.
A short boat trip takes you to the incredible ‘Bird Island’ a small uninhabited craggy island literally teeming with birdlife and massive monitor lizards. This is a must on your Mfangano to do list. There are also chances to see Pelicans and feed the resident fish Eagles, a fantastic photo opportunity.
